Do you know a place called "Shinjuku Golden Gai"?

 

Shinjuku Golden Gai is a very popular place among not only Japanese but also people from overseas, and attracts many tourists. If you visit the place once, you will never forget the unique atmosphere of the town.

One of its main characteristics is that people working in bars and coming to bars are very open-minded and friendly. I even know an international couple who have met here and married.

In this adorable town, a terrible incident took place.

It happened on 12th of April

The massive fire broke out in Golden Gai on 12th of April in 2016. Most of bars in the area are two-story old wooden buildings and the fire spread immediately. Three buildings in 300 square meters are burnt down. The news was widely reported by both the Japanese and international media.

The fire appeared to have started in the second floor which was under repair. I was a regular visitor to the first floor of the building, a bar called "Liumin". I would have been visiting there for 10 years in coming May.

At the moment, we do not know if the fire was due to an accident or arson attack. Bar Liumin is still under investigation and closed down. The bar is in trouble because nothing will be paid for by fire insurance unless the cause of the fire is clarified.

This does not apply only to Liumin, but some other bars are in the similar situation.

This is why I launched this project to support the bars damaged from the fire, hoping the people there will keep smiling.

Your support for this irreplaceable town, "Shinjuku Golden Gai", is very much needed.

What is to be done with the funds

We are planning to distribute the aid from you according to the priority written below.

1.Bars which cannot be scheduled to reopen for business

2.Bars that are scheduled to reopen but repair is needed

3.Bars that reopened but damaged by the fire

When proportion of distribution are decided, we will inform you through this page and direct emails.

*Please note that the funds might be donated to Shinjuku Sankoh Shopping District Promotion Association, the association for Golden Gai, in the case in which we find it difficult to distribute the money equally.
